The
M-PESA Foundation has officially handed over a newly constructed and fully
equipped Mother and Child Unit at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital,
marking a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen maternal and child
healthcare services in Vihiga County.

The
handover ceremony brought together county leadership, healthcare professionals,
and members of the local community, who toured the new facility and engaged
with expectant and new mothers receiving care at the unit. As part of the
event, mama packs were issued to mothers, reinforcing dignity, comfort, and
support during childbirth and early postnatal care.
According
to the Foundation, the project was delivered through close collaboration with
county authorities and healthcare teams, ensuring the unit meets essential
clinical and patient care standards. Community participation also played a key
role in the project’s success, with local residents benefiting from employment
opportunities created during the construction phase.

The
Mother and Child Unit is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide
quality maternal, neonatal, and postnatal services, contributing to improved
health outcomes for women and children in the county. The initiative reflects a
shared commitment by stakeholders to advancing accessible, dignified, and
quality healthcare for mothers and children in Vihiga County.
