The West
African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use marked
World Environment Day 2026 with a high-level climate dialogue in Accra,
convening stakeholders from government, diplomatic institutions, academia,
development organisations, media, youth groups, and the private sector.
The event
focused on advancing practical climate solutions. Prof. Emmanuel Wendsongré
Ramdé, Executive Director of WASCAL, reaffirmed the centre’s commitment to
translating climate science into scalable and inclusive solutions through the
Climate Change Action Now initiative launched in 2025.
Remarks were
delivered by Ms. Annassi Kerstin on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry of
Research, Technology, and Space, while Mr. Moses Ayamba, Director of Monitoring
and Evaluation, represented Ghana’s Minister for Climate Change and
Sustainability. A keynote address by Nana Sean Yaw Adjei Sikapa Agyeman
stressed the need to ensure climate research informs policy, community action,
innovation, and sustainable implementation.
Activities
included solidarity messages from partner institutions, a panel discussion
titled “From Global Commitments to Practical Implementation – Youth, Science
and Diplomacy for Climate Action,” contributions from the WASCAL CCAN Executive
represented by Dr. Daniel Ofori, a climate action pledge, and a symbolic
tree-planting exercise.
Dr. Seyni
Salack delivered closing remarks, reinforcing the collective responsibility to
accelerate climate resilience through partnerships, science, youth engagement,
and implementation-focused action.
