Eswatini has taken a major
step towards strengthening its digital governance framework following the
review and validation of the country’s National Data Governance Policy
(2027–2031), aimed at promoting responsible data use, improving public services
and supporting innovation.
The policy sets out a
framework for how data can be managed and utilised to enhance digital services,
protect personal information and create opportunities for economic growth
through data-driven innovation.
The validation process
brought together stakeholders from government, the private sector, civil
society, academia and development partners, who highlighted the importance of
establishing strong institutions, effective leadership and investment in skills
to ensure successful implementation.
The initiative is supported
through the Team Europe Data Governance in Africa Initiative, with
collaboration from GIZ African Union, as part of broader efforts to help
African countries develop secure, inclusive and trusted digital ecosystems.
Stakeholders noted that
while policy validation represents an important milestone, translating the
framework into practical outcomes will require sustained commitment, resources
and coordinated action across different sectors.
The National Data Governance
Policy is expected to provide guidance for improving data management practices,
strengthening public sector digital services and creating an enabling
environment for businesses and innovators in Eswatini’s growing digital economy.
