Senegal is moving to
strengthen its national artificial intelligence and digital innovation
ecosystem, with the Minister of Telecommunications and Digital Affairs, Samba
Diouf, reaffirming government support for research-driven technology
initiatives emerging from the Sheikh Ahmadoul Khadim University (UCAK).
The Minister participated in
the restitution day of activities organised around the 2026 Grand Magal of
Touba, alongside the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation,
under the chairmanship of Serigne Bassirou Abdoul Khadre Mbacké.
The scientific sessions,
held under the theme “Social networks and artificial intelligence: community
challenges and scientific responses,” brought together researchers, academics,
experts, students and development partners to examine how digital technologies
and AI can address community challenges while supporting the preservation of
Senegal’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Diouf said the initiatives
presented were aligned with the government’s New Deal Technologique,
particularly its priorities around skills development, innovation, digital
sovereignty, artificial intelligence and the development of local digital
content.
Among the proposals
presented were a digital heritage library, AI systems adapted to local
datasets, multilingual translation tools, knowledge platforms, solutions to
combat disinformation and digital applications designed to serve communities.
The Minister also welcomed
proposals to strengthen Senegal’s digital and research infrastructure,
including the establishment of a digital skills centre, an artificial
intelligence research laboratory, a sovereign data centre and increased support
for applied research.
According to the Minister,
these investments will help build an ethical and sovereign AI ecosystem capable
of generating value for citizens while strengthening Senegal’s technological
capabilities.
The Ministry of
Telecommunications and Digital Affairs has pledged to work with UCAK and other
stakeholders to identify priority projects, assess their feasibility, mobilise
technical expertise and support their implementation under the New Deal
Technologique.
The government expects the
initiative to translate the recommendations from the scientific sessions into
practical projects capable of advancing research, innovation, digital
sovereignty and socioeconomic development in Senegal.
