Kenya is exploring how artificial intelligence and digital technologies can strengthen healthcare delivery, improve access to care and support better health outcomes as the country develops its digital health ecosystem.

The discussions were convened by Kenya’s Special Envoy on Technology, Ambassador Philip Thigo, who brought together stakeholders from government, healthcare, technology and development organisations to examine how the country can build on its existing digital health foundations in the age of AI.

The engagement focused on opportunities in community health, clinical decision support, disease surveillance, health intelligence, forecasting of medicines and medical supplies, and more timely access to healthcare.

Participants also examined the conditions required to take digital health solutions to scale, including common standards, data sovereignty, interoperability, certification, secure access to health infrastructure and stronger engagement with counties.

The discussions further considered practical pathways for Kenyan innovators and technology partners to develop, test and deploy solutions that respond to the country’s healthcare priorities.

Thigo acknowledged the participation of Anne Stake of Anthropic’s Beneficial Deployments team, colleagues from the United States Embassy in Nairobi and partners across Kenya’s health and technology ecosystem.

He said Kenya’s digital health progress should not be measured by artificial intelligence adoption or technological hype alone, but by whether technology improves healthcare, lowers costs, expands access and delivers better health outcomes.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of leadership and collaboration in building a digital health environment that is open to innovation while remaining grounded in public health priorities and the needs of citizens.

Thigo said Kenya has an opportunity to develop a digital health ecosystem that combines innovation with strong public health foundations and is designed around the needs of its people.
