The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) has launched an Earth Observation Innovation Laboratory (EOIL) at Taita Taveta University to expand access to satellite data, strengthen technical skills and create opportunities in the country’s growing space sector.

The launch was attended by KSA Director General Maj Gen Hillary Kipkosgey, Taita Taveta County Governor Dr Andrew Mwadime and the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Finance and Planning, Prof. Kiptanui Too.

The EOIL is an innovation hub designed to provide students, researchers and industry experts with access to geospatial data, digital infrastructure and open-source geospatial tools. It will support the development of innovative geospatial applications to address challenges in agriculture, climate resilience and urban planning, while strengthening Kenya’s data governance capacity.

Through the laboratory, students, innovators, startups and institutions will benefit from access to geospatial data, technical training, certification, prototyping facilities, networking opportunities and expert support.

The project was conceptualised in 2024 under the European Union-funded Data Governance in Africa Initiative. It is funded by the European Union and France, implemented by Expertise France in partnership with the Kenya Space Agency, and hosted by Taita Taveta University and the University of Nairobi.

The laboratory is expected to provide a platform for advancing research, fostering innovation and transforming satellite data into practical solutions.

The Kenya Space Agency said it remained committed to promoting innovation and developing the necessary infrastructure to support research and innovation for sustainable national development.
