Uganda’s
telecom giant, Airtel and Post Bank Uganda have partnered to officially launch
the Wendi Mobile App to address digital inclusion in the country.
The new
App according to officials eases receivership and deposit of PDM funds from the
Wendi App to their Airtel Mobile Money wallet.
Speaking
during the launch ceremony, the Managing Director of Airtel Money, Japhet
Aritho disclosed that communities will now be able to easily access the PDM
funds using over 200,000 mobile money outlets across the country.
“Through this initiative, we hope to foster Uganda’s
development from the lowest level which is the Parish level to ensure
socio-economic transformation through digital inclusion financial,” he said.

According
to the Statistical Abstract 2019/20 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal
Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), Agriculture is a crucial driver of Uganda’s
economy accounting for 70% of employment, contributing half of all exports, and
one-quarter of the national GDP.
"This PDM initiative aims to support Ugandans from the
grassroots level and will boost the country’s agricultural sector. As Airtel
Money Uganda, we are proud to be part of this transformation journey.” Japhet
added.
“Our people can now access their funds on their mobile phones
through Airtel Money on the Wendi app downloadable on a smartphone. Those who
have feature phones can simply dial *229# and then follow the process.” Japhet
Aritho concluded.
In his remark, the State Minister for Kampala and
Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye also noted that all paperwork for
opening bank accounts is eliminated.
