Rwanda's public
transport sector has entered a new era with the launch of the country's first
electric intercity bus route connecting Muhanga to Kigali, Nyanza, and Huye.
The pioneering initiative by electric mobility company BasiGo represents a
major step in Rwanda's transition to sustainable transportation solutions
across its provinces.

Twelve new
electric buses were officially handed over to long-time transport operator
Volcano Express during a ceremony at Muhanga Taxi Park. The modern vehicles
feature wheelchair accessibility, enhanced passenger comfort, and zero tailpipe
emissions. To support operations, BasiGo is installing DC fast charging
infrastructure in Muhanga, ensuring reliable service on the intercity
routes.
The Managing
Director of BasiGo Rwanda, Doreen Orishaba in her address during the hanging
over ceremony noted the significance of expanding electric mobility beyond
Kigali. "This launch proves electric buses can effectively serve
Rwanda's intercity network while reducing environmental impact," she
stated. The deployment builds on BasiGo's successful electric bus operations in
the capital and aligns with national goals for clean transportation.

Volcano Express
Managing Director Dr. Igabe Egide also outlined the environmental benefits of
the transition. "After 25 years in the transport business, we recognize
our responsibility to adopt cleaner technologies that protect Rwanda's natural
beauty," he remarked. The electric buses offer operators lower
maintenance costs compared to conventional diesel vehicles.
The Muhanga
route marks the beginning of BasiGo's nationwide expansion, with plans to
introduce electric buses in Eastern, Western, and Northern provinces. The
initiative supports Rwanda's climate action commitments while creating local
employment opportunities in the growing green transport sector.
