Nigeria’s Federal Ministry
of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has announced plans to
conduct a comprehensive assessment of recent developments surrounding MTN
Group’s proposed acquisition of IHS Towers.
In an official statement,
Minister Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani said the Ministry is closely monitoring the
transaction, citing the strategic importance of telecommunications
infrastructure to national security, economic growth, financial services, and
social inclusion. He noted that the review will be carried out in collaboration
with relevant regulatory authorities to evaluate the potential impact on the
sector.
The Ministry emphasized that
over the past two years, the government has implemented measures aimed at
stabilising and strengthening Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. According
to the statement, these efforts have contributed to improved profitability,
increased infrastructure investment, and greater operational stability among
key operators.
Dr. Tijani stated that the
government’s objective is to ensure that any market consolidation or structural
changes safeguard consumer interests, protect investments, and preserve the
long-term sustainability of the sector.
The Ministry reaffirmed its
commitment to maintaining a stable and transparent policy environment to
support the continued growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.
