MTN
Zambia has become the first operator in Africa to successfully complete field
testing of Starlink’s Direct to Cell service, marking a major milestone in
expanding connectivity across the continent. The tests involved the
transmission of the first data session and fintech transaction using MTN
Zambia’s spectrum in combination with Starlink’s satellite constellation.
The service will allow customers to access data,
voice, and video applications—including WhatsApp voice and video calls, as well
as MTN’s MoMo and MyMTN apps—even in remote areas where terrestrial networks
are unavailable. Starlink Direct to Cell works with existing LTE/4G devices and
leverages satellites as cellphone towers in space, using advanced phased array
antennas and network integration over laser links to provide seamless
connectivity.
The
initiative is expected to extend coverage to Zambia’s most isolated regions,
including game parks and rural areas surrounded by rivers, and is pending
regulatory approval for commercial rollout.
MTN
Zambia acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Technology and Science and
the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA)
throughout the process.
