The
Science for Africa Foundation has announced the appointment of Abdoulaye Djimdé
to the United Nations Scientific Advisory Board, a global panel of experts that
provides independent, evidence-based guidance on science, technology and
innovation for sustainable development and policymaking.
Prof.
Djimdé, a leading malaria researcher and Head of the Molecular Epidemiology and
Drug Resistance Unit at the Université des Sciences, des Techniques et des
Technologies de Bamako, is widely recognized for his contributions to
understanding antimalarial drug resistance. His research on the genetic
epidemiology of malaria has been instrumental in identifying molecular markers
of chloroquine resistance, influencing treatment policies across Africa.
In
addition to his scientific work, Prof. Djimdé has played a significant role in
advancing research capacity on the continent. Through initiatives such as the
DELTAS Africa programme, he has supported the training of emerging African
scientists in genomics, bioinformatics and infectious disease research.
His
appointment is expected to bring an African perspective to global scientific
advisory processes, particularly in areas related to infectious diseases,
genomic surveillance and research capacity development, as the United Nations
continues to integrate science-driven approaches into international policy
frameworks.
