The
Instituto Nacional das Comunicações de Moçambique (INCM) has marked Girls in
ICT Day 2026 with an initiative aimed at encouraging greater participation of
girls in information and communication technologies and STEM-related fields.
The
event, held on 24 April in alignment with the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU), sought to raise awareness and inspire young women to pursue
careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics as part of efforts
to reduce the country’s digital divide.
Speaking
during the event in Mozambique, INCM Chairperson Helena Fernandes highlighted
that while progress has been made in expanding access to telecommunications
services, challenges remain in ensuring effective internet use, improving
digital skills and increasing women’s participation in the technology sector.

She
noted that girls continue to be underrepresented in technology-related
education and professional pathways, underscoring the need for sustained
interventions to address gender disparities in the digital ecosystem.
The
initiative forms part of broader efforts by INCM and its partners to promote
inclusive digital development and strengthen capacity building among young
women in Mozambique.
Officials
said increasing female participation in ICT is critical to fostering
innovation, expanding economic opportunities and ensuring that digital
transformation benefits all segments of society.
