The
UNON Director-General Zainab Hawa Bangura has called for stronger
African leadership in shaping the continent’s health systems, as she delivered
opening remarks at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026 held at the
United Nations Office at Nairobi.
The
high-level gathering brought together Heads of State, ministers, and global
health leaders under the theme “Reimagining Africa’s Health Systems:
Innovation, Integration, and Interdependence,” focusing on strategies to
strengthen healthcare delivery across the continent.

In
her address, Bangura emphasized that Africa possesses the talent, innovation,
and leadership required to build resilient and people-centered health systems.
She highlighted the importance of leveraging local capabilities while fostering
global collaboration to address emerging health challenges.
The
meeting is expected to facilitate dialogue and knowledge exchange among
stakeholders, with discussions aimed at advancing integrated and sustainable
health solutions. Participants are exploring approaches to enhance system
resilience, improve coordination, and accelerate innovation in healthcare
delivery.

The
outcomes of the summit are anticipated to contribute to shaping future policy
directions and strengthening health systems across Africa.
