Kenya has launched the AI
for Disability Project as part of efforts to promote inclusive digital
transformation and expand access to technology opportunities for persons with
disabilities and underserved communities.
The initiative was unveiled
during the Connected Africa Summit 2026 in Nairobi and is being led by Kenya’s
Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in partnership
with the Kenya Institute of Special Education, Qhala, inABLE, Assistive
Technologies for Disability Trust and Huawei.
According to the organisers,
the project is aimed at ensuring that digital transformation efforts remain
inclusive and accessible, in line with the broader goal of leaving no one
behind in the digital era.
The initiative will focus on
enhancing digital skills development, supporting innovation ecosystems and
strengthening inclusive digital infrastructure to improve participation in the
digital economy.
Stakeholders involved in the
project said the programme is designed to create opportunities for persons with
disabilities to engage more effectively in technology-driven sectors while also
addressing barriers to access and inclusion.
The AI for Disability
Project is also expected to encourage the development and adoption of assistive
technologies and artificial intelligence solutions that support accessibility,
learning and economic empowerment.
The launch reflects Kenya’s
growing focus on leveraging emerging technologies and partnerships to advance
digital inclusion and strengthen participation across all segments of society.
