South Africa’s National
Space Agency (SANSA) has marked its 15th anniversary with the launch of the
Natural Resources Management Programme (NRMP), an initiative aimed at using
Earth Observation technologies to support environmental protection and sustainable
development.
The programme was officially
launched on 8 May 2026 during the AmaXhosa Kingdom’s King Hintsa 191st
Salutation Event held at Nqadu Great Place in the Eastern Cape.

The initiative seeks to
leverage space science and satellite-based technologies to safeguard South
Africa’s land, water resources, and biodiversity while supporting economic
growth and environmental sustainability.
Minister of Science,
Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, delivered the keynote address
at the event, which brought together government officials, academics, members
of the AmaXhosa royalty, community leaders, and school learners from the Nqadu
community.

According to the Department
of Science, Technology and Innovation, the launch of the NRMP reflects SANSA’s
continued commitment to applying space science and innovation to address
developmental and environmental challenges in South Africa.
The agency said the
programme represents an important step toward strengthening sustainable natural
resource management and building long-term resilience in the Eastern Cape and
other parts of the country through the use of advanced Earth Observation technologies.
