The Ministry of
Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs of Senegal has partnered
with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene and the German development
agency GIZ to advance the implementation of a national interoperability
framework for the country’s health sector.
The two-day co-construction
workshop brought together stakeholders from across Senegal’s health system to
develop a roadmap for improving interoperability among health information
systems.

The initiative forms part of
Senegal’s broader “New Deal for Technology” agenda, which aims to build a
sovereign, interoperable, and citizen-centered digital ecosystem across
strategic sectors of the economy.
According to the Ministry of
Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs, the health sector has
been identified as one of the priority areas for sectoral implementation of the
National Interoperability Framework.
The workshop was organised
with support from the Deutsche
Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) under the
“Digital Health in Africa Promoting Interoperability for an AU Data Market”
project.
Officials said the framework
is intended to enable health information systems across the country to
communicate effectively, facilitate secure and reliable data sharing, and
improve evidence-based decision-making at both health facility and national
levels.

The Ministry of
Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs, acting as coordinator of
Senegal’s digital transformation agenda, indicated that it would oversee the
development and implementation of a sector-specific interoperability framework
for health in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene as
well as technical and financial partners.
Stakeholders at the workshop
examined practical approaches to strengthening digital health infrastructure
and improving coordination within Senegal’s healthcare system through
interoperable digital platforms and integrated data management systems.
