ITDP Africa has announced
that Ethiopia has officially launched its National E-Mobility Strategy and
Implementation Plan for 2025–2030, marking a major policy step toward cleaner
and more sustainable urban transport systems.
The strategy sets out a
comprehensive framework aimed at expanding electric vehicle charging
infrastructure, promoting electric public transport systems, strengthening
regulatory and institutional frameworks, integrating renewable energy sources,
and advancing environmentally friendly urban mobility solutions across the
country.

Stakeholders at the launch
emphasized that the transition to electric mobility goes beyond the adoption of
electric vehicles alone and requires a broader transformation of urban
transport systems.
According to ITDP Africa,
successful e-mobility implementation depends on the development of compact,
connected and transit-oriented cities where electrified public transport,
improved walkability and inclusive urban planning work together to enhance mobility
and reduce emissions.
The strategy is expected to
support Ethiopia’s long-term efforts to modernize its transport sector while
addressing urban congestion, air pollution and climate-related challenges
through coordinated policy and infrastructure development.

Officials noted that the
implementation phase will require strong collaboration between government
institutions, private sector actors and development partners to ensure that
infrastructure expansion and regulatory reforms are effectively aligned with national
development objectives.
The launch positions
Ethiopia among a growing number of African countries advancing structured
e-mobility strategies as part of wider commitments to sustainable urban
development and climate resilience.
