The United Nations Office
for Digital and Emerging Technologies has launched the AI Governance for
Humanity Lab in Valencia, Spain, marking a new step in efforts to strengthen
international cooperation on artificial intelligence governance.
The initiative was unveiled
alongside the Valencia Dialogues, bringing together policymakers, researchers,
industry practitioners, and AI governance experts for two days of discussions
focused on practical approaches to governing artificial intelligence systems.
The sessions examined how
different AI governance frameworks can be made interoperable across
jurisdictions, as well as how existing governance commitments are being
implemented in practice by the private sector.

UN Tech Envoy Amandeep Gill
noted that as artificial intelligence evolves rapidly, there is a growing need
for inclusive and practical international cooperation grounded in shared
principles to ensure that innovation benefits humanity. He described the Valencia
Lab as an important platform for advancing innovation in AI governance.
According to the United
Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, the Lab is designed to
contribute analytical outputs to broader international policy processes and
support ongoing global discussions on AI regulation and oversight.

The initiative also forms
part of the United Nations’ broader mandate to facilitate multi-stakeholder
dialogue on digital governance, including preparations for the first Global
Dialogue on AI Governance and the establishment of an Independent International
Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.
Organisers say the Valencia
Lab and associated dialogues will help strengthen the global architecture for
AI governance by promoting coordination, knowledge sharing, and policy
alignment among stakeholders worldwide.
