Nigeria has signed a Letter
of Intent with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to advance the $7 billion
Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme (IATP), marking a significant step
toward strengthening aviation infrastructure and connectivity across Africa.
The agreement was formalised
on May 28, 2026, during the AfDB Annual Meetings in Brazzaville, where
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, signed
on behalf of the government.
The Letter of Intent commits
both Nigeria and the African Development Bank to collaborate on
operationalising the programme, which is designed to improve aviation
infrastructure, enhance financing mechanisms and strengthen regional air
connectivity across the continent.
The signing followed
Nigeria’s presentation of its aviation reform agenda and a Country Compact for
the sector during a dialogue session with the AfDB President and Board of
Governors.
As the African Champion of
the Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme, Keyamo described the
initiative as a strategic opportunity for both Nigeria and the wider continent,
emphasizing its potential to transform aviation systems and unlock economic growth.
The programme aligns with
broader African Union objectives aimed at modernising airports, improving
access to aircraft financing and increasing private sector participation in the
aviation industry.
For Nigeria, the initiative
is expected to support major upgrades to airport infrastructure and advance
reforms intended to position the country as a leading regional aviation hub
within Africa’s growing air transport market.
The African Development Bank
is expected to play a key role in mobilising financial and technical support to
ensure successful implementation of the programme across participating
countries.
