Niger has developed climate
projects valued at nearly $130 million through the work of its National Centre
of Experts for the Green Climate Fund (GCF), in an initiative aimed at
strengthening the country’s capacity to mobilise international climate finance.
The projects were presented
during a ceremony held in Niamey by the Commission Climat pour la Région du
Sahel (CCRS), which also presented certificates to members of Niger’s National
Centre of Experts.
The ceremony was chaired by
Niger’s Minister of Environment, Hydraulics and Sanitation and attended by CCRS
Executive Secretary Issifi Boureima, the Executive Secretary of the National
Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development (CNEDD), Niger’s GCF
National Designated Authority and a representative of UNICEF Niger.
The initiative is designed
to build a pool of national experts capable of translating Niger’s climate
priorities into structured and bankable projects suitable for climate finance.
Led by the CCRS in
collaboration with Niger’s Ministry of Environment, CNEDD and UNICEF, the pilot
initiative seeks to strengthen national ownership of climate finance
development and improve the country’s ability to access resources from the
Green Climate Fund.
