Senegalese environmental
scientist and Director-General of the Centre de Suivi Écologique (CSE), Prof.
Cheikh Mbow, has been appointed Chair of the Science-Policy Interface (SPI) of
the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
The appointment was made
during COP17 and will see Prof. Mbow serve a four-year term in the position,
where he will help guide scientific work aimed at informing policies and
decisions on land degradation, desertification, drought and land degradation neutrality.
His new role is expected to
strengthen the connection between scientific research, public policy and
practical action in addressing some of the major environmental challenges
facing countries and communities affected by land degradation and drought.
GéoSénégal described the
appointment as recognition of Prof. Mbow’s scientific expertise and his work in
promoting stronger links between science, policymaking and implementation on
the ground.
The appointment also
represents a significant recognition for Senegal’s scientific and environmental
community, particularly given the country’s growing contribution to
international discussions on environmental sustainability and natural resource
management.
Through the UNCCD
Science-Policy Interface, Prof. Mbow will contribute to efforts to ensure that
scientific evidence is effectively translated into policies and measures
capable of supporting sustainable land management and resilience to
environmental pressures.
