Two young Kenyan women,
Mirigo Mburu and Teresiah Kamau, have been selected as National Finalists for
Mission ShakthiSAT, an international space mission organised by Space Kidz
India.
The two are currently
representing Kenya and Africa at Gautam Buddha University in India, where they
are participating in activities focused on satellite technology, space science
and international space collaboration.
Women in Space Kenya said
the selection of Mburu and Kamau highlights the growing participation of young
Kenyan and African women in the global space sector.
Their involvement in the
Mission ShakthiSAT programme provides an opportunity for the two finalists to
gain exposure to space technologies while engaging with participants and
experts from different parts of the world.
The organisation said the
achievement also demonstrates the importance of creating pathways and
mentorship opportunities to support more women and girls in pursuing careers in
science, technology and the space sector.
Women in Space Kenya also
recognised Wanjiku Kanjumba for her mentorship and leadership in supporting
opportunities for young African women to access the space ecosystem.
The two finalists are
expected to serve as role models for other young women in Kenya and across
Africa interested in pursuing opportunities in satellite technology, space
science and the broader space industry.
