A total of 330 young people
in Kenya’s Keiyo South constituency have completed a digital literacy programme
delivered through the solar-powered Huawei DigiTruck, as the government and
partners step up efforts to expand digital skills alongside connectivity.
The graduates were
recognised at a ceremony in Nyaru, Keiyo South, attended by Energy and
Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Hon.
William Kisang, Huawei representative Adam Lane and the area Member of
Parliament, Hon. Gideon Kimaiyo.
Principal Secretary for ICT
and Digital Economy Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui said digital transformation must
reach communities across Kenya and stressed that digital skills are as
important as connectivity in enabling citizens to participate meaningfully in
the digital economy.
He noted that the government
is expanding connectivity through the National Digital Superhighway and
last-mile fibre infrastructure, while programmes such as the DigiTruck help
bring practical digital training closer to communities that may face barriers
to accessing technology education.
Through the solar-powered
mobile training facility, the Keiyo South cohort received hands-on instruction
in digital literacy and related skills aimed at preparing them for
opportunities in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
Tanui urged the graduates to
share their knowledge with others, pursue advanced digital skills and use
technology to create and build rather than simply consume digital services.
He said the graduates should
view the completion of the programme as the beginning of a broader journey
towards innovation, entrepreneurship and participation in the digital economy.
Tanui also acknowledged
Huawei Technologies through its TECH4ALL initiative and Computers for Schools
Kenya (CFSK) for partnering with the government to advance digital inclusion.
The ceremony also included
the recognition of winners of the DigiTruck Innovation Competition, while
representatives from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, Konza
Technopolis and ICT Authority, among other government officials, attended the event.
