Gabon has officially
launched fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks, marking a new step in the
country’s digital transformation, with the telecommunications regulator
reaffirming its requirements for network coverage, quality of service and
consumer protection.
The launch took place on
October 26, 2026, during the first edition of Gabon Digital Week in Libreville.
Speaking at the ceremony,
Célestin Kadjidja, Chairman of the Regulatory Council of the Regulatory
Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP Gabon), highlighted
the challenges associated with the technological transition and the regulator’s
role in overseeing its introduction.
The launch follows more than
a year of consultations and negotiations, culminating in ARCEP Gabon’s
favourable opinion for the introduction of 5G and the allocation of frequency
resources to the country’s two mobile operators, Airtel Gabon and Moov Africa
Gabon Telecom.
The new technology is
expected to improve the performance and capacity of mobile networks, support
the development of new digital services for citizens, businesses and public
administrations, and strengthen household connectivity through solutions such as
fixed wireless access (FWA).
It is also expected to
accelerate digital inclusion across the country.
Beyond technological
innovation, ARCEP Gabon said the priority remains the effective improvement of
services offered to the population.
Kadjidja called on mobile
operators to continue their network deployment efforts in strict compliance
with regulations and their coverage and quality-of-service obligations, while
offering tariffs adapted to the realities of the Gabonese market.
