The
Executive Secretary of the Commission Climat pour la Région du Sahel, Issifi
Boureima, has held a working session with officials from the Economic
Commission for Africa (ECA), focusing on strengthening collaboration on climate
finance and carbon market mechanisms for the Sahel region.

The
meeting, held on Monday February 16, 2026, brought together an ECA delegation
led by Dr. Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng, Director of the Climate Change, Food
Security and Natural Resources Division, alongside Environmental Affairs
Officer Louis Mitondo Lubango.
Discussions
centred on the operationalisation of a regional carbon market registry designed
to support Sahelian countries in structuring, tracking, and monetising carbon
credits. The engagement also explored new areas of joint activity aimed at
enhancing regional climate action frameworks.

Both
institutions reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation to help
Sahelian states strengthen climate resilience and improve access to climate
finance opportunities, particularly amid growing global emphasis on
market-based climate instruments.
