Kenya has held high-level
strategic discussions with Nokia’s leadership at the company’s Global Executive
Experience Center in Espoo, focusing on the future of the country’s digital
infrastructure and its positioning within the emerging global artificial
intelligence (AI) economy.
The engagement brought
together Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the
Digital Economy, Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, and senior executives from Nokia to
explore pathways for strengthening Kenya’s connectivity, data infrastructure,
and digital transformation agenda under the leadership of President William
Samoei Ruto.
Kenya and Nokia highlighted
a partnership spanning more than two decades, which both sides described as a
strong foundation for continued collaboration in advancing the country’s
telecommunications and digital capabilities.
During the discussions,
Nokia leadership emphasized that in the AI era, trust and stability would be as
critical as technological advancement in determining which countries succeed in
building next-generation digital economies. Kenyan officials echoed confidence
in the country’s positioning, citing its policy environment and ongoing
infrastructure investments.
The talks also addressed the
rapid expansion of global data traffic, projected to double over the next eight
years, largely driven by artificial intelligence applications. Participants
noted that countries that fail to invest in AI-ready infrastructure, including
data centres, fibre networks, and AI-native systems, risk falling behind in the
global digital economy.
Kenya outlined its ambition
to position itself as a regional and continental hub for digital innovation,
supported by ongoing investments in data centres, connectivity infrastructure,
and enabling policy frameworks designed to attract global technology partners
and investors.
According to Kenyan
officials, the collaboration with Nokia reflects a shift from strategic
ambition to practical implementation, aimed at accelerating the country’s
digital transformation and strengthening its competitiveness in emerging
technologies.
The government reaffirmed
its commitment to fostering an open investment environment and deepening
partnerships with global technology companies to support innovation, economic
growth, and job creation in the digital sector.
Both parties expressed
optimism that continued cooperation will play a key role in shaping Kenya’s
participation in the global AI economy and expanding its influence as a leading
digital hub in Africa.
