The
African Telecommunications Union (ATU) has held discussions focused on
strengthening collaboration with digital platforms to support Africa’s ongoing
digital transformation efforts.
The
engagement was led by ATU Secretary General John Omo, who received Mercy
Ndegwa, Director of Public Policy for East and Horn of Africa at Meta, for a
high-level exchange on the role of digital platforms in advancing the
continent’s development priorities.
According
to the ATU, the discussions highlighted the growing significance of digital
platforms in shaping how people across Africa communicate, access information,
conduct business, and engage in increasingly digital societies.
The
parties explored opportunities for deeper collaboration to ensure that platform
technologies contribute more effectively to Africa’s economic and social
development agenda.
ATU
noted that digital platforms are now central to everyday life and therefore
play a critical role in enabling connectivity, information access, and digital
participation across diverse communities.
Secretary
General John Omo emphasized the importance of maintaining active and purposeful
partnerships with technology companies and other stakeholders committed to
supporting a more inclusive and development-oriented digital ecosystem for
Africa.
The
Union reaffirmed its commitment to expanding cooperation with like-minded
partners to accelerate digital inclusion, strengthen connectivity, and advance
Africa’s broader digital transformation objectives.
