The African Telecommunications Union African Telecommunications Union has underscored the importance of national-level action in driving regional digital transformation, during its participation in Mozambique’s 5th National Communications Conference held in Maputo.

The Union attended the conference at the invitation of the National Communications Institute of Mozambique INCM - Autoridade Reguladora das Comunicações, where it engaged policymakers, regulators and development partners on strategies to advance the country’s communications and ICT agenda.

ATU Secretary-General John Omo highlighted that meaningful regional progress depends on strong national commitment and leadership, noting that decisions within the ICT sector are heavily influenced by political will at the highest level of government. He welcomed the presence of President Daniel Chapo Daniel Chapo at the conference, describing it as a demonstration of the importance Mozambique places on the digital sector.

The Union used the platform to advocate for a coordinated communications agenda focused on digital transformation, emergency preparedness, inclusion and resilience. It also commended Mozambique for integrating connectivity into broader state functions, including citizen engagement, public protection and national development.

The conference brought together senior stakeholders from across the global ICT ecosystem, including International Telecommunication Union Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin Doreen Bogdan-Martin and Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation Secretary-General Bernadette Lewis Bernadette Lewis, alongside Mozambique’s Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation Américo Muchanga and other sector leaders.
