Morocco has reaffirmed its commitment to sovereign artificial intelligence and digital innovation following a high-level meeting between the Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, and United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies, Amandeep Singh Gill.

The engagement took place on the sidelines of the United Nations Open Source Week in New York and focused on global cooperation in emerging technologies, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence governance, innovation frameworks, and digital transformation strategies.

During the meeting, Minister Seghrouchni presented Morocco’s strategic vision for sovereign artificial intelligence, anchored in the “AI Made in Morocco” initiative. She underscored the country’s ambition to develop domestic AI capabilities that strengthen technological independence while fostering innovation-led growth.

She also highlighted Morocco’s broader digital strategy, which seeks to establish what she described as a “digital third way” grounded in open innovation, trust, and multilateral cooperation. According to the Minister, this approach is designed to balance technological advancement with ethical standards, inclusivity, and international collaboration.

Discussions with the UN Special Envoy also touched on the importance of strengthening global coordination on digital and emerging technologies, particularly in areas such as data governance, AI safety, and equitable access to digital infrastructure.

Officials noted that the meeting reflects Morocco’s increasing engagement in global digital policy discussions and its commitment to contributing to international efforts aimed at shaping the future of artificial intelligence in a way that supports sustainable development.

The engagement forms part of broader activities at United Nations Open Source Week, which brings together global leaders, policymakers, and technology experts to advance dialogue on open-source innovation and digital transformation.
