The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has opened the 131st Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meeting, calling for careful and evidence-based decisions as policymakers assess the impact of global economic uncertainties and rising energy prices.

The meeting, which began on Monday, 20 July 2026, will review recent developments in Ghana’s economy, including inflation trends, the effects of the Bank’s May policy reforms, domestic liquidity conditions and emerging external risks.

Dr. Asiama said Ghana has continued to demonstrate macroeconomic resilience but stressed the importance of maintaining a data-driven approach to monetary policy decisions amid changing global and domestic conditions.

“Our task this week is not simply to assess the latest data. It is to determine whether the framework we strengthened in May remains fit for the conditions now before us, and whether the choices we made then continue to serve the medium-term objectives on which our credibility depends,” he said.

The Governor noted that the MPC’s deliberations would focus on ensuring that policy measures remain aligned with the Bank’s objectives of maintaining economic stability and strengthening confidence in the country’s financial system.

As part of efforts to improve transparency and public understanding of monetary policy, Dr. Asiama also announced the launch of the inaugural Monetary Policy Committee Educational Observership Programme (MPC-EOP).

The programme will provide students from the University of Ghana with an opportunity to observe aspects of the MPC process and gain practical insight into monetary policy decision-making.
