Senegal Space Agency hosts European astronaut Thomas Pesquet

The Senegalese Agency for Space Studies (ASES) has hosted French astronaut Thomas Pesquet of the European Space Agency (ESA) during his visit to Dakar, highlighting the growing interest in space science, technology and skills development in Senegal.

ASES Director General Maram Kaire and his team welcomed Pesquet on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, for discussions focused on the importance of space exploration, scientific innovation and international cooperation in advancing the space sector.

Pesquet, who has completed two missions aboard the International Space Station, shared insights from his career, which has contributed to scientific research, technological advancement and global collaboration in space exploration.

ASES said the visit aligns with its mission to bring space sciences closer to the public, develop local expertise and support the gradual emergence of a strong space culture in Senegal.

The agency highlighted the role of space technology in strengthening knowledge development, innovation and human capital while encouraging greater interest among young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
