Uganda has renewed its
commitment to advancing digital transformation through strengthened cooperation
with China and Huawei, following a high-level engagement between government
officials and representatives from the Chinese Embassy and technology company.
The Minister of ICT and
National Guidance, Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba, together with the Minister
of State for ICT, Hon. Joyce Nabosa Ssebugwawo, and Acting Permanent Secretary
Sophia Nantongo, held discussions with officials from the Embassy of the
People’s Republic of China in Uganda and Huawei on expanding collaboration in
the digital sector.
The meeting focused on
opportunities to accelerate Uganda’s digital agenda, including ICT skills
development, technology innovation and partnerships aimed at building a
stronger digital economy.
During the engagement,
Acting Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Fan XueCheng, highlighted the
long-standing cooperation between Uganda and China and reaffirmed the
importance of continued collaboration in areas that support national
development.
Huawei also reiterated its
commitment to supporting Uganda’s digital transformation efforts, particularly
through initiatives focused on developing ICT talent and strengthening digital
skills among young people.
The technology company
highlighted programmes such as the Huawei ICT Competition as part of its
contribution to nurturing the next generation of technology professionals and
supporting innovation across Uganda.
The Ministry of ICT and
National Guidance said partnerships with global technology players and
development partners remain critical to expanding digital capabilities,
improving access to technology and positioning Uganda for growth in the digital
economy.
