The European Union’s
Scientific Panel on AI is investigating recent incidents involving loss of
control over artificial intelligence systems and has prepared questions for the
companies that developed the models involved, according to Henna Virkkunen, Executive
Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy.
Virkkunen said she hosted a
special meeting of the panel to discuss the recent AI incidents, as AI
capabilities continue to advance rapidly.
The panel brings together 60
independent experts from around the world who provide technical expertise to
support the implementation and enforcement of the EU AI Act.
Working with the AI Office,
the experts have prepared a set of questions for the companies responsible for
developing the AI models involved in the incidents.
“AI capabilities are
advancing rapidly,” Virkkunen said, stressing the importance of a strong legal
framework, decisive enforcement and scientific expertise in addressing emerging
risks.
“With a strong legal
framework, decisive enforcement and the best scientific minds guiding our work,
we can lead the way in ensuring safe and secure AI,” she said.
The work of the Scientific
Panel forms part of the EU’s efforts to strengthen the implementation and
enforcement of its AI rules as increasingly capable systems raise questions
about safety, oversight and the potential loss of control.
