The World Health
Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) has held discussions with
European Union partners on strengthening regional health collaboration, health
systems and preparedness for health emergencies.
WHO Regional Director for
Africa Professor Mohamed Janabi said the discussions took place during the 2026
World Health Summit (WHS2026), highlighting the potential for cooperation
between the EU and WHO to improve health security across both regions.
“The EU brings scientific
and regulatory expertise, financing and experience of cooperation between
countries,” Janabi said.
He added that these
strengths, combined with WHO’s presence across the African Region and its close
work with governments, could help build stronger health systems and improve
preparedness and response to health emergencies.
Janabi stressed that
partnerships must be guided by African priorities and strengthen national
institutions to deliver lasting results.
“That is how we advance
African health sovereignty and strengthen health security for both regions,” he
said.
