Uganda has launched its
National Data Strategy to strengthen how the country manages, protects, shares
and uses data to drive national development.
The strategy was officially
launched by Minister of State for Information, Hon. Joyce Nabosa Ssebugwawo,
according to the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance.
The strategy is built around
three key pillars: data governance, data infrastructure and strategic data
utilisation. These are supported by people and culture, as well as research,
innovation and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the launch,
Ssebugwawo emphasised that data is a strategic national asset that can support
evidence-based decision-making, improve public service delivery, promote
innovation and create opportunities for economic growth.
She called on government
institutions, the private sector, academia, civil society and development
partners to take ownership of the strategy and translate its priorities into
practical action.
The Ministry of ICT and
National Guidance acknowledged the support and collaboration of UN Global Pulse
and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in advancing Uganda’s data
agenda.
The strategy sets a shared
direction for the country’s use of data, with a focus on strengthening
governance, developing infrastructure and promoting the effective use of data
to support national development.
