Mozambique’s National
Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC, IP) has hosted
a delegation from the Mozambican Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA)
as part of efforts to strengthen dialogue and collaboration on the development
and responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in the country.
The meeting, held at INTIC’s
facilities, was chaired by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Dr.
Eng. Lourino Chemane, who received the AMIA delegation and highlighted the
importance of cooperation between the public sector, private sector, academia
and civil society in promoting the development of safe, ethical and inclusive
artificial intelligence.
Discussions focused on the
opportunities presented by AI to improve public service delivery, modernise
public administration, promote innovation, increase productivity and develop
solutions to address societal challenges.
Prof. Chemane also outlined
INTIC’s mandate and its role in defining, coordinating and implementing
policies and strategies in the information and communication technologies
sector, while supporting the development of a secure, inclusive and innovative
digital ecosystem.
A key part of the engagement
was the presentation of the proposed National Artificial Intelligence Strategy,
known as ENIA, which is currently being developed by INTIC to guide the
responsible development and adoption of AI across Mozambique.
According to INTIC, the
strategy is being developed through an ongoing consultation process involving
stakeholders from different sectors of the national AI ecosystem to ensure that
it reflects the country’s development priorities.
AMIA expressed its readiness
to contribute to discussions surrounding the development of artificial
intelligence in Mozambique and called for stronger coordination between public
institutions and the different actors involved in the country’s growing AI ecosystem.
The meeting forms part of
INTIC’s broader engagement with the private sector and other stakeholders as it
works towards developing a comprehensive national framework for artificial
intelligence.
The Mozambican Association
of Artificial Intelligence also invited INTIC to participate in its official
launch ceremony scheduled for next Wednesday, marking what the association
described as a new stage in organising and promoting national actors involved
in artificial intelligence.
