The Secretary General of the
African Telecommunications Union (ATU), John Omo, has been honoured in Côte
d’Ivoire for his eight years of leadership at the helm of the Union and his
contribution to Africa’s digital transformation.
The honour was conferred by
Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Digital Transition and Technological Innovation,
Djibril Ouattara, in the presence of dignitaries and representatives from more
than 20 African countries.
The recognition comes as
Omo’s tenure as Secretary General approaches its conclusion at the end of 2026,
with delegates reflecting on his years of engagement with African Member States
and partners and the progress achieved during his stewardship.
The ceremony provided an
opportunity for representatives of African countries to pay tribute to Omo’s
leadership and his contribution to strengthening the Union’s role in Africa’s
digital transformation.
Tributes also came from
countries outside Africa, including Iraq, whose delegation commended Omo for
what it described as his excellent performance and his contribution to leaving
behind a vibrant Union.
The Iraqi delegation was led
by Hon. Ali Al Khwaildi, who joined representatives from other countries in
recognising Omo’s leadership and service to the ATU.
